The Beaumont Safety Trophy – Winners of 2014

The Beaumont Safety Trophy, which was sponsored by Morgan Sindall Plc, the Trophy is awarded annually for the individual or company for the best new device or method of working initiated for preventing accidents in the Construction Industry.

This year, the standard of entries have been incredibly high and so the decision that the judging team had to make was that much more difficult.

This year’s winner is StaySafe (trading name of Safety Apps Ltd) who have developed a product that can be used across a wide range of sectors as well as construction sites.

The app tracks a lone-workers location via GPS and alerts their manager if they do not check-in within a specified time, even if their phone has switched off.  Once employees have downloaded the app onto their Android, Apple or Blackberry smartphone, their employer can keep track of their safety in an online Hub which accurately locates them on a map and provides real-time updates on their location.  If an employee activates the app’s panic button or fails to check in, alters are automatically triggered on screen via text and email, allowing help to be sent immediately.

Ramtech – Runner up

Ramtech have the most amazing product that means that we in the construction world can feel safer and have a greater confidence when it comes to saving our colleagues and the site structures in the case of fire. Unfortunately we still have damage occurring on our sites and with the continued use of timber frame construction, the need for superb fire detection equipment is not going to reduce – if anything it will continue to increase. Ramtech have built on last year’s WES system and provided the second generation – it is not only the only system that is fully compliant with EN54 but it is also cost effective and flexible thus making it versatile and preferred system of choice on today’s constructions sites. From all those who already use it, the feedback is positive. The system has been designed to be flexible enough to cope with the changing Health and Safety demands of an evolving building site. The Group’s Annual Awards event on Thursday 12th March 2015 held at the Radisson Blu Portman Hotel in London was once again a great success and very well attended.

Propalock – Highly Commended

This locking system is fitted to adjustable telescopic steel props, its purpose is to contribute to the security and management of safe working practices in temporary works/support situations during the execution of construction works and in particular it provides a very reliable and economic method of temporary support at any exact height between its closed and extended positions. This amazing product provides infinitely variable adjustments. Again this system provides safety support in an area of work where sometimes it has been hard to find. Your design should be used in this important area of construction work to provide a better level of safety. It is simple, extremely effective and the team should be really commended for the innovative design.

Red plant – Highly Commended

Red Plant who have been working with the development team at Elebia to produce a unique crane hook. This allows both loading and unloading using a hook that is remotely operated thus achieving the attaching and releasing of a load with no manual intervention. The hook is operated by the driver of the vehicle for example from a place of safety – he/she has a hook load capacity of 20 tons, 10 tons and 20 tons models available . The hook is magnetic and so the opening and closing of the hook is both simple but effective. This is then supported by a motor that is operated with an improved clutch protection method. We can see that the opportunities for use will obviously grow and the potential for development are very positive.

McGee – Commended

McGee have used NFC – Near Field Communication technology to develop an App that tags the vehicle you wish to review and detail for servicing/maintenance or to identity driver faults. The system automatically identifies the vehicle to be reviewed and therefore all the defects can be noted down during this 360 walk around and logged accordingly. Cabs and trailers are fitted with tags so that a clear audit trail can be logged along with photos and driver comments, all being passed through to the workshop ensuring that they can focus on all the pertinent areas. The initial pilot has been very positive and McGee’s are now expanding the system to involve some 60 lorry drivers.

Trad Hire & Sales – Commended

Trad have worked with Plettac to introduce a new scaffolding system engineered in Germany using a rosette system of construction which not only ensures speed and efficiency of construction, but also liked with other really positive additions such as the colour coding of various pieces of the scaffolding items and the delivery on site of preformed items such as permanent guardrails and decking to a new advanced design, coupled with the ability to conduct in a curricular format means that safety and innovation are at the for front of their package to the customer. The system is to be admired for its simplicity whilst enhancing ease of build and improved safety features.
