DESIGNED FOR

All levels of management with responsibility for controlling the use of cranes and lifting gear. Also suitable for safety advisers and previously trained crane drivers and slingers.



Course Objectives

To provide a clear understanding of the legislation concerning the use of cranes and lifting gear, of the relevant codes of practice and to give guidance to the principles of safe systems of work.



Course Content

Responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act and relevant regulations:
Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 98 (LOLER)
Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER 98)
Provisions of British Standards:
CP 3010
BS 7121 (Various) parts – Safe use of cranes –
Contractural arrangements - Contract Lift and Crane Hire
Duties of the Appointed Person
Recommended safe systems of work: 
Planning the lift - Explanation of the elements of Crane Lift Plan including:
Risk Assessments, Method Statements, the load, the site and environmental constraints
Selection of cranes and lifting gear - mobile, tower, lorry-loaders
Load Assessments
Stability of Cranes
Lifting accessories
Slinging methods
Syndicate Exercises  - based on planning a lifting operation including Crane selection using Crane Duties Chart
