Winners of CHSG’s Annual Awards 2016
The Group’s annual event on Tuesday 15th March was very well received and attended by 200 + guests another successful and enjoyable evening at the Radisson Blu Hotel, London.
The event, which has been a feature in the Group’s calendar since 1959, is built around informality; speeches and presentations are kept short and informative.
The guests were kept entertained by Dominic Holland an English comedian, author and broadcaster. He won the 1993 Perrier Best Newcomer Award in Edinburgh. Dominic has become one of the most respected and sought after awards hosts, officiating at numerous events.

Training over the past twelve months has been extremely well received and we have seen a increase not only on our open courses but also courses held at various company locations.

Chairman’s Special Award
This year we would like to take this opportunity of thanking AllDay Safety Services Ltd for again sponsoring this award which presented to an individual who has given, not only to the CHSG training Centre but to the indstry as a whole. Russell Ord joined CHSG as a Trustee in 1989, where he after held the role of Chairman in both 1991 – 1992 and 1995 – 1996. He held the office of Secretary/Chief Executive from 1997 – 1999 and has throughout his considerable time with the Group been a very well respected trainer too. Many of Russell’s students have sent through glowing statements of support an the feedback we always receive from his courses are superb.
Silver Safety Award
This trophy is sponsored by JSP, The Silver Safety Award is quite unique, as it can be awarded to a person or a company, but the essential winning formula is determined by excellence of performance and, support for the group and overall commitment to build H&S awareness and understanding to the wider audience. This year the award goes to a company who has supported the Group for many years. They give up their time, they provide presentations, they open up their companies facilities to the Group and they make H&S a more understandable beast !!!!
Pinsent Masons have through their work with the Group been an invaluable support and in particular Sean’s work on the Board of Directors has been both technically and as part of the Board team hugely appreciated. Sean has also given us some memorable legal discussions, along with some superb guidance and expertise. Last year Pinsents also gave the Group their first Mock Trial, we were then also joined by Kizzy and Oliver, the event was very popular and gave us all a lot to think about. Kizzy also joined us for what has become the annual legal update and again this is hugely appreciated by many different companies both big and small. I think we are very appreciative that the Pinsent Masons team are also able to make the legal speak understandable.
The Beaumont Safety Trophy – 2015 Winners
The Beaumont Safety Trophy, which was jointly sponsored by Morgan Sindall and Principal People. The Trophy is awarded annually for the individual or company for the best new device or method of working initiated for preventing accidents in the Construction Industry.
This year, the standard of entries has been incredibly high and so the decision that the judging team had to make was that much more difficult.
The CITB CDM wizard is simple but effective tool developed for the SME market has given many companies, who may never had experienced the CDM regulations in a previous life, a wonderful easy, quick and confidence giving tool to ensure conformance in the role and activities they are performing. HSE approval was gained, the tool was developed, modified and improved and then made available on Android too, so that by the time the regulations were launched CITB ensured they were supporting the workforce who needed effective and efficient support in a format that makes sense and gives them the ability to conform without too much bureaucracy. This has been achieved by CITB really well.
Nationwide Platforms’ entry, SkySiren PCS, has been designed to protect MEWP operators from overhead crushing and trapping incidents. Developed specifically for boom lifts, the system features ultrasonic sensors which automatically detect and alert operators of potential entrapment hazards. The system also incorporates Nationwide Platforms’ original SkySiren pressure sensor device – winner of the CHSG Beaumont Trophy in 2011– as a failsafe, making it the first system on the market to offer double protection.
Biosite have developed a one-stop shop software to ensure effective logs, security services, media screens, workforce control combined with certification of CSCS and CPCS card information (even noting expiration and ensure notification is sent). They can also build in a near miss tablet that will where needed include an automatic activation of either security and/or subcontractor alarms. The company has combined health, safety and security data and services in a way that is intuitive to the industry. Given our industry can have some pretty harsh environments too – this requirement for robust hardware development went hand in hand with the software development ensuring a complete package has been delivered to the industry. The company’s mantra has always been to be customer led and when you look at the current package and future capabilities we believe that this is an excellent package
McGee’s entry was a really good App called Inspection Manager, the app provides a fully integrated workflow which ensures that all sorts of equipment/checks, actions that go over and above regulatory requirements are checked and logged, but more importantly the system has an in build defect closeout process and can then confirm completion. Ensuring that every action/item is checked and actioned without a mountain of paperwork – thus reducing omissions in the process. The tool is easy to use, extremely creatively developed, and completely linked to the construction environment, in both an effective and efficient way. It can check 45 tonne excavators down to small shackles, all at the touch of a button or a slide across screen. McGee’s have received some very positive testimonials and it is evident that the use of this App on site has proved to be very well received and extremely well used.
Jincom EHS communications specialises in simplifying complex health, and environmental materials through the use of illustrations and animations. They take risk assessments, method statements, operating standards, even your accident and incidents reports and they urn them into 2D and 3D animations, live action filming and E-Learning or mobile digital solutions in a really short space of time. This amazing use of technology produces easy to understand, effective and efficient training materials that can be used in the office and on site. The formats do not limit the message to a particular language and means that the media material is company specific and can be used right down to the incident specific group involved. The company supplied examples of procedures manuals, pamphlets, posters, brochures and DVD’s. The included a really good visual example of how an animated 3D live action film could convey both the accident and the resulting points to a varied workforce, in a timely cost effective and very efficient manner. We believe that Jincom has developed a unique product that many companies in this room will be interested to review. If is a superb entry both from content and presentation.
