BSR Extend Registered Building Inspectors Assessment Period

The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) have announced a 13-week extension to complete mandatory competency assessments for building control professionals in England to become Registered Building Inspectors (RBIs).

The date assessments need to be completed for those who meet the criteria extension has now changed from 6th April to 6th July, to allow for more professionals to register, joining the 3,260 who have done so already.

 

I understand those concerns and have been working with colleagues in BSR and across government to consider what we can do to support the profession. To that end, the decision has been taken to implement a competence assessment extension period for those meeting set criteria.

Criteria for the extension are:

Those not registered by April 6th will no longer be able to benefit from the extension and will also not be able to continue to work on regulated building control activities.

Updated versions of the mandatory professional codes and standards for the building control profession have also been published and came into force from 6 April 2024. This includes the:

  • Code of Conduct for Registered Building Inspectors
  • Building Inspector Competence Framework (BICoF)
  • Professional Conduct Rules (PCRs) for Registered Building Control Approvers
  • Operational Standards Rules (OSRs) and supporting Monitoring Arrangements for local authorities and Registered Building Control Approvers
