CHSG and Park Health Team Up For World Suicide Prevention Day 2023

The 21st World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) will take place on 10th September, and with 70 major health and welfare organisations across the globe coming together to reinforce this sensitive but hugely important topic, CHSG have teamed up with Park Health to bring you Episode 5 in our Health in Construction podcast series.

Melodie Gilbert and Clare Forshaw discuss suicide prevention in the workforce and what we all can do to recognise and reduce the number – how a good workplace mental health culture needs to start from the top and the importance of education on the subject – hearing from a mental health first aider.

5583 suicides were registered in 2021, of this number 74% were male - 16 deaths per 100,000, with women 5.5 deaths per 100,000.

How brave and powerful to be able to reflect on that experience and be able to communicate all those amazing and awful experiences to help others who might find themselves in a similar situation or to educate others to be prepared if ever found in a situation like that.

The Samaritans say that for every life lost around 135 people suffer intense grief or are otherwise affected, and there are warning signs we can look our for as employers or in everyday life:

  • Feeling restless and agitated
  • Feeling angry and aggressive
  • Feeling tearful
  • Being tired or lacking in energy

The Samaritans helpline number is 116123.
