The SMSTS two-day Refresher Course is designed for those that have previously passed the full SMSTS course or subsequent refresher course.
It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace (health and safety, environmental and welfare). The course includes a wide range of topics building on the previous five-day course programme, as well as introducing new subjects.
Note: It is a course requirement to provide a copy of your current CITB SMSTS Certificate prior to attending the course.

Course Overview
The SMSTS two-day refresher course aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving an overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. The course will build on the content covered in the previous five-day course programme.
By the end of this refresher course delegates will be aware of and able to implement:
- All updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation, which affects your role as a manager
- New guidance and industry best practice
- Your duties and responsibilities with regard to health, safety, welfare and the environment
The course covers the Health and Safety at Work Act and the regulations relevant to the construction industry. It also covers recent changes to regulations, approved code of practice and working practices.
Course Content
The SMSTS refresher course will cover the following topic areas:
- Regulations update and overview
- Fire prevention and control
- Risk Assessment;
- CDM
- Accident reporting, investigation, prevention and control
- Management of health onsite
- Behaviour -based safety
- Drugs and alcohol abuse
Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a CITB certificate.
CITB SSP Courses - Mandatory Requirements
Delegates will be required to bring some form of photographic identification with them on the day of their course. Where identification is not provided by a delegate, they will be refused attendance on the course.
In order to attend this course delegates must have a good understanding of spoken and written English.
For the SMSTS Refresher course, prior to attending the course, delegates are required to provide a copy of their current CITB SMSTS Certificate. This certificate can be emailed to our team at: info@chsg.co.uk. This is a course requirement.
All training is conducted at our John Ryder Training Centre in Chertsey. Centre opening hours are 8am to 5.30pm, but this course commences at 9am and will finish at approx 5pm, unless otherwise stated in the joining instructions you receive.
Refreshments are included on all courses, but NO LUNCH is currently provided, but there are lots of lunch options within walking distance of the centre.
Please ensure you have read the joining instructions before arriving at our training centre.
If you are travelling by road, Chertsey is served by both the M3 and M25. No parking is permitted on the grounds of the Centre, but there is sufficient free parking in and around Chertsey, all within walking distance.
For those using public transport, Chertsey is served by a good service from Waterloo, changing at Staines, Weybridge or Virginia Water for the Chertsey line. The station is approximately ten minutes walk from the Centre.
If you are attending a two day course and require overnight accommodation, a local hotel list is available upon request.
