This 5 day course is designed for Site Managers, Project Managers, Supervisors and Engineers whose duties include responsibility for the planning of lifting operations and who will have overall control to act on behalf of the management, when required to move the load.

The course is specifically designed for those who wish to become an appointed person or who need to refresh this position. 

The course provides a clear understanding of all safe use of cranes and lifting gear used in safe lifting operations on site, including duties for tower cranes.  The course incorporates all of the relevant health and safety legislation including BS’s and ACOP’s.

Note: All candidates wishing to attend the Appointed Person course must have completed their Managers & Professionals Health, Safety & Environmental test before starting the CPCS (AP61) Appointed Person Training.

A module is included which covers the effect of wind on suspended loads, this is not standard with other providers.

Course Information

Course Overview

The CPCS Appointed Person Training Course for Lifting Operations is designed to provide clear information on all current legislation, codes of practice and guidance notes associated with the safe use of cranes and lifting gear during lifting operations.

Leading to the implementation of a safe system of work through acquired theoretical and practical knowledge and information on the Appointed Person’s responsibilities. 

The course is 5 days in duration, which allows for extra exam preparation time. Unlike other training providers, the CHSG/Liebherr course includes Appointed Person duties for tower cranes. A non-standard module on the effects of wind on suspended loads is included. 

In order to complete this course you must have already completed your Managers & Professionals Health, Safety and Environment test. Find further information here

Course Content

This course will cover the following topic areas:

  • Responsibilities and all statutory requirements – in particular the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and the approved Code of Practice BS 7121 supporting legislation
  • Requirements of British Standards approved Code of Practice
  • BS7121 “Safe Use of Cranes” and the role of the Appointed Person (AP61)

On the successful completion of the course delegates will be issued with a red CPCS card.

All training is conducted at our John Ryder Training Centre in Chertsey. Centre opening hours are 8am to 5.30pm, but this course commences at 9am and will finish at approx 5pm, unless otherwise stated in the joining instructions you receive.

Refreshments are included on all courses, but NO LUNCH is currently provided, but there are lots of lunch options within walking distance of the centre.

Please ensure you have read the joining instructions before arriving at our training centre. 

If you are travelling by road, Chertsey is served by both the M3 and M25. No parking is permitted on the grounds of the Centre, but there is sufficient free parking in and around Chertsey, all within walking distance.

For those using public transport, Chertsey is served by a good service from Waterloo, changing at Staines, Weybridge or Virginia Water for the Chertsey line. The station is approximately ten minutes walk from the Centre. 

If you are attending a two day course and require overnight accommodation, a local hotel list is available upon request.
